Before & After Removing Veneer

Happy Monday to all of you.

Today we are going back in time.  For some, it might feel like it is yesterday since I haven’t been blogging all that long.  If that is the case, just humor me!

I received many emails and questions in response to my post on  How To Remove Veneer.  In addition, it has been pinned many times over but since it was one of my first posts, I thought I’d revisit it.

Here is the before.  As you can see, it was in really bad shape:

A wet towel and an iron can work wonders:

Here is the result:

Here is what the piece looked like after I finished it.

Do you have something like this that you need to tackle?

 Be inspired,

Ugh. I have done this before, and it is one of my most-hated tasks! I will be saving your tips in case I ever have to do it again!

  6. Emma Ann Weatherly says:

I am SO glad to see this post. I have a table I truly love… nothing expensive, but bought from a friend who I love… you know how that goes. Anyway – the veneer is chipped, so I've long wanted to remove it. I considered simply using a heat gun, or perhaps an iron. You've encouraged me – you make it do-able! Thanks!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this! I was just at St Vinny's yesterday looking at a China Cabinet I desperately wanted to make over. I didn't buy it because two pieces of the wood were veneered and I didn't think I could work with that. Now I know how and I can go back and get it! Hooray! Thank you!

  8. THANK YOU!!! I have a table that I need to do this too but I had no idea how!!

  9. Great information Shari! Thanks for sharing. :)

  10. Plain Graces says:

That's a good method! I tried borax on my wood floors and that worked. I have a bunch of old cabinets I salvaged from an old barn. I will need to try this! Thanks- I am glad I stumbled upon you at Tip Junkie.

  11. You've really transformed this dresser and it looks wonderful! The finish on the body looks really cool. What type of paint did you use- chalk paint? It seems to be the go-to paint these days! Visiting from Kristin's party.

  17. Kammy's Korner says:

I REALLY needed that!!! I'm always slowly chipping away at old veneer, usually making nice gouges in the process…. :)

  19. Great job on the top. I did a tutorial on removing veneer too but I will try your idea of a wet towel and iron next time. I used a heat gun and putty knife and it came right up.

I'm a DebbieDoo's graduate, but I didn't know how to remove veneer. I have a table to the left of me right now that I love. The bottom is gorgeous, but the top not so nice. I though I would have to cover it of paint which I did not want to do. So a big thanks for letting me know I can remove and stain. I have my fingers crossed that you will share your post with Sunday's Best going on right now. Sharing is a good thing. You chest is lovely. Great job!

  31. Christine says:

Oh, good tip. Over the summer I removed the veneer from a desk and without this trick it was much harder than what yours looks like and the results were definitely not as good.
