DIY: Vintage Totes For Fall

Hey guys, I’m so happy today is Friday.  I’m looking forward to some much needed family time over the next few days – and a couple of good books.  I’m going to do my best to stay away from work so if you catch sight of me on Pinterest orFacebook, slap me and tell me to go away.

I wanted to recap my guest post for My Repurposed Life in case some of you didn’t see it.  A couple of weeks ago, I showed you my farmhouse summer caddies.  Today, I want to show you my vintage-inspired fall caddy.  They are two totally different looks, but I love both of them.

Fall Caddy By Turnstyle Vogue

I started out with these pieces:

1) 1” x 8”  and 1” x 4” boards (one each.)  You can use any wood.  For this one, I used clear pine.

2) One 18” long galvanized pipe from the plumbing store.  I used 3/4”opening.

3) Two galvanized steel fittings that are the correct size for your pipe!

4) Electric nail gun or wood screws.

5) Stain of your choice.  I used Antique Walnut.

6) Black spray paint

7) Graphic of your choice.  I created mine but you can find free graphics online.  The Graphics Fairy is a great resource.

Cut the pieces as follows:

ENDS: 1” x 8” x 12”.  I dog-eared the ends  1 1/2” from the corner.

SIDES: 1” x 4” x 18”

BASE: 1” x 8” x 18”

Next,  stain your pieces.  I did 4 coats on the base and ends and ONE coat on the sides so the graphic could be seen clearly.

Then spray paint your pipe and fittings.

Finally, before you poly the pieces and put your caddy together, you want to add the graphic.  Although I’ve done this with different methods, I used the wax paper method for this.  I will try to do a tutorial on it soon, but for now, you can find many different tutorials with a Google search or Pinterest.   Just be sure to mirror-image your text before you print!

Before you construct the tote, go ahead and poly your wood pieces and the pipe/fittings.  I always put a minimum of three coats.  For step-be-step instructions on putting it together, you can follow my tutorial for the summer caddies.  You will just need to be sure to get your pipe fittings centered properly.

  2. Love this! thank you for sharing how you made it.
Your apples look right at home in it. I am off to look at the farmhouse ones you made.

I love this style too! … And good luck on taking some time off. I keep trying, but it doesn’t seem to work!
