Furniture Debut: Reflection… For A Cause

Hello!

I’m excited to show you a special piece today.  It will be heading to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life auction tomorrow and hopefully will contribute to a big night of fundraising for a great cause.  When I was asked by a local business if I would be willing to donate one of my pieces, I jumped at the chance.

Cancer has hit my family hard as it has many other families.

Every step is a step forward.

So, with that said, let me show my contribution piece:  Reflection

I don’t have a “before” shot, but it was very similar to this:

With the mirror, it was difficult to get “the perfect photos” to really give you a good look, but I will do my best!

I have often stained the drawers and legs on these vintage dressers, while painting the frame/body.  However, I chose to reverse it this time and paint the drawers while staining the frame to match the top.

The stained finish is the result of sanding the original finish down to natural wood, followed by applications of weathered gray stain, light wax and a darker wax by Fiddes and Sons,  called Jacobean (a very black color.)

The paint is Annie Sloan’s Arles.  After sanding and distressing, a light wash of weathered gray was applied, in addition to the light and Jacobean waxes.

The stained application looks a lot like something from Restoration Hardware.

I am in love with the hardware.  The teardrops are original.  I altered them slightly by applying a  sheer coat of silver Rub N Buff over the brass.

One of the pulls had been replaced at some point in its life with another teardrop that didn’t quite match.  I opted to remove that pull, along with another, and attach these glass knobs.  Originally they had a bright, brassy base (say that three times!) so I toned the bases down with a matte gold.  I think the gold was a great combination with the Arles paint – pulling out the yellow.

I hope you take a moment to reflect and send good thoughts to the Relay tomorrow night  – here, and all the other Relays that are taking place throughout the summer.

Be inspired,
