Good morning! I hope everyone had a great Labor Day.
Are we all ready to dive into fall – and all that fall brings – head first? I am! Our filbert harvest is creeping up on us and the leaves are already starting to turn in a few places. Football has started and school starts this week for Joey.
So I say bring.it.on.
I’m showing you a fun little bench I did a couple of weeks ago. The Gossip Bench.
It is called a gossip bench because that is exactly what it is – or was, back in the day.
The before shot reveals the original and second layer of chair fabric, both of which made me gag a little. LOL.
The finish was in pretty bad shape. I would have loved to strip it down and restore it with a beautiful mahogany stain but
a) I don’t have that kind of time
b) I don’t have that kind of patience
c) I know better
Believe it or not, this was done with a five layer treatment.
- A custom chalk paint color mix
- A wash with a custom chalk paint color mix/wash
- A wash with a mahogany stain
- Light Wax
- Jacobean wax
Out with the rotary phone and in with a glass of wine and cell phone.
So, do you have any good gossip to share?
I promise it will stay just between you and me.
Can’t you just picture a Mrs. Kravitz (remember her??) sitting here with her black rotary phone on the side?
I can – but it would have to be next to a window so she could be peeking outside the curtain and spying on her neighbors at the same time.
Did you know a Mrs. Kravitz? I sure did. Two of them actually, and they shall remain nameless of course.
Be inspired,

Turning lifetime passion into livelihood. It's about time! I'm Shari. I am a 40-something wife, mother, corporate professional turned design stylist, avid sports fan, and usually exhausted 24/7 keeping up with it all. I love my family, my home, my work...and the chaos that comes with it. I also happen to adore my beagle, Scout.

I adore this. I have my grannies. It’s much simpler. This one is pretty stunning. It’s another gorgeous transformation!!
I LOVE this bench. The color and the fabric are fantastic.
Cynthia
That is an especially pretty finish Shari! Love the color and that has to have the prettiest lines I have ever seen on a gossip bench. And finally, yes, yes I do both remember Mrs. Kravitz and know a few myself!
Your modern take with the wine and cell phone are pure genius for staging!
I love the way this turned out. The paint treatment is gorgeous. Great transformation! ~ Angie
I love the combo of the paint colour and the fabric – great choices!!
i love this- the color is awesome! and can you fill that glass up for me. thanks.
Oh my my. This is the most fabulous Gossip Seat I’ve ever seen. My grandmother had one and she might of, just maybe, picked up the phone when it was not her ring tone from time to time. In those days it was the ‘party line’ that allowed you to listen and gossip, while sitting in this chair. None of those chairs were as beautiful as this one. I really really love it.
Oh my goodness, i cannot believe that is the same bench. That came out great. I would love it if you could share this wonderful post at our What’s it Wednesday linky party. I hope you can join us.

Gorgeous as always!
This is so gorgeous! I love the transformation. I’m your newest follower on Facebook!
I’d love for you to share this at my party, Twirl & Take a Bow at http://www.houseontheway.com! It would be a great addition. I hope you can stop by.

I love gossip tables and have redone a few myself. You did a great job with this one! It now looks modern and usable instead of an antique no one is supposed to sit on.
What a pretty update on a classic! You gave this one a whole new life!
My grandmother had one of these, and I had my parents store it for me for awhile. Then they wanted to make a Goodwill donation, I let it go.
Yours turned out great.
Hope you’ll come see Jane’s vintage doorstop collection. Dropping by from Met Monday – #38.

What an awesome update! The bench looks wonderful now. Isn’t it increasingly hard to remember a day when you were tied by the length of the cord to where the phone had to be used?
