How To Style Your Coffee Table Tray The EASY Way

Good morning!

Somebody commented to me the other day that my coffee table display looked “so put together” and that they could never get theirs to look good.

Good news:  that is so not true.

Do you ever stare at your ottoman, coffee table, bookshelves, or other space wishing you could figure out how to style it a certain way?

Do you know in your mind what you want, but you can’t seem to put it all together?  Do you just need a little light-bulb moment to get you started?

Well, this post is just for you.  I am going to show you how to get started – and it is EASY. EASY. EASY.

So easy that you will be smacking your head.

Let’s start with an empty tray…

Now think of it this way:

So far, so good, right?

Now, think about what you want to display but remember that it should either be something you love, or something you need.

If it doesn’t fit into those two categories, then don’t display it.  Your decisions should reflect you, not what you think people want to see.

For a good mix, consider this list and choose 4 main categories to fill your quadrants.  If you want more, that’s fine too.  You will just layer them.

  • Natural
  • Whimsical
  • Intellectual
  • Personal
  • Historical
  • Scents”-able
  • Cultural
  • Practical

Got all that?

Good.  Now, consider these as well as they are important for a eye-catching arrangement:

  • Height differential
  • Color blending
  • Layering
  • Textures

So let’s look at my tray that I have on my table right now:

Do you see how easy it is?  1-2-3-4

To get some height, I used a planked wooden spool to set my plant on.

The spool is planked so that gives me texture.  Boom!

The book has green, white and gold on the cover and it just so happens that those are the colors of the items I have on the tray.

If it is a challenge for you now, it won’t be after a while.   It will just come naturally.

Trust me!

Let’s look at a second option:

Notice that the height differential, color blending, layers and textures are all accounted for as well.

Don’t limit yourself either.  Get creative on the categories.

You don’t have to use books or magazines for your “intellectual.”  How about a collection of vintage maps?

“Scents”able?  Try potpourri or reed diffusers.

“Practical?”  Remotes or notepads.

You get the picture. Speaking of pictures..

For personal?  How about a piece of jewelry or favorite framed photo, or combine it like this:

My little charm bracelet.  All those little girls are adults now!  Time sure goes by.

So…that is it!

It is so easy that I bet you are SMH’ing now.  You know…smacking your head?

(I just recently discovered that SMH meant shaking my head. LOL)

Have a great week!

Be inspired,

  1. This is such good advise Shari, I too have a problem with displaying items. I really like the second one I’m going to try that one. Have a great day!

  2. Great post and tips Shari, thanks.

  3. Leticia Fernandez says:

I love this idea, I usually don’t add anything to the coffee table because I fee it may look cluttered, but this is inviting. :)
On a side note, I do have a problem where I have too many picture frames all over the living room. I know its too much, but I have no idea how to display my pictures without it looking overwhelming. Can you provide some ideas?

  4. Very well done! Thanks for sharing.
